The Case for Waterborne Alkyds

The industry has long sought alternatives to the conventional alkyds that for decades were prized for their durability and smooth glossy finish as well as ease of application: these were the "go-to" products for doors, trim, chair rails, base moldings, etc. With the industry now gripped by the need to meet LEED and/or new or pending government VOC limits, interest in traditional alkyds has waned considerably. But now, waterborne alkyd paints are making their presence known in the market, and depending on the application, appear to provide the lower VOC with alkyd performance and application properties that specifiers, owners, and contractors are seeking.

Since it was first introduced, waterborne alkyd technology has had its bumps in the road. But the chemistry has evolved considerably over the last decade, with current generation products far advanced above the early formulations.

MPI offers a range of standards for interior waterborne alkyd paints, from primer to gloss finishes, each with performance/testing requirements virtually the same as their solventborne counterparts.

And several manufacturers now have products approved under those standards that offer VOC under 50 g/l, clean-up with soap and water, resistance to yellowing, and application properties their manufacturers say are comparable to conventional high VOC alkyds. Specifying the Right Finish
for Your Finish

Selecting the appropriate degree of gloss for interior topcoats can be tricky, and your choice can substantially affect durability as well as appearance. The deciding factor is generally the service environment of the surface to be coated — but the answer isn't always obvious. Take the case of a long hallway that may encounter considerable traffic. Coating the walls with a gloss finish would certainly provide greater durability: marking would be minimized, and washability and stain resistance would be greater than if a flat coating were used. On the other hand, aesthetically, the flat coating would show fewer surface irregularities than the gloss coating, and provide a "warm" diffused color and appearance. What to do? Updates to MPI Standards and Paint Systems
Updates

Out with MPI #7, and in with a new #5
Reprinted from the Sept 2010 news

MPI has decided to delete #7 Primer, Oil for Exterior Wood. We'll now include this product family under MPI#5 Primer, Alkyd for Exterior Wood, which has been re-written to encompass oil technology and is now appropriately re-named Primer, Alkyd/Oil for Exterior Wood.

Good news for those who specify MPI's Paint Systems: all systems that reference MPI #7 are written as an "either/or" with either MPI #5 or MPI #7 as the primer for the mid–coat and topcoat. For example, System EXT 6.1C Solid Color Stain for glue–lam beams and columns is listed as Alkyd Primer #5 plus two coats of MPI #14 Solid Color Stain, with a second option for Oil Primer #7 plus the same two coats of MPI #14 — but both options are referred to as system EXT 6.1C.
