MPI's X-Green is now the most rigorous environmental standard in the world, and architects and property managers who select MPI X-Green approved paints will achieve the ideal combination for their projects: high performance and durability; a maximum 50 g/l VOC; and indoor air quality that meets LEED's newest rating system (LEED 2009 for Schools) as well as the Collaborative for High Performance Schools emissions requirements. |

The EPR number shown on many of our paint category Approved Products Lists makes it easier for specifiers to choose products that combine low VOC with greater durability. Here's how.
While VOC is one aspect of 'green,' MPI maintains that a paint's durability over its lifetime is also a critical measure of sustainable building, because the total environmental cost of continuous repainting can far outweigh the impact of initial VOC emissions. Fact is, some MPI categories offer greater durability than others -- for example, our #138 High Performance Architectural Latex standard offers more durability than our #44 Interior Latex; higher gloss level standards (e.g. MPI Gloss Level 5) can be more durable than their corresponding flats (e.g. MPI Gloss Level 2) etc. So a product's EPR rating is a score that combines its VOC rating (indicated by its "E" number) with a durability rank that MPI assigns to that paint category. The higher the EPR, the better the product is for optimizing 'green' along with performance characteristics. |

Are You X-Treme Green Worthy???
Paint suppliers with MPI-approved products can be listed at no charge in the corresponding X-Green category if you meet our GPS-2 requirements (maximum VOC 50 g/l) AND have third-party verification that your product meets CHPS VOC emissions requirements. For more information, call MPI headquarters at 1-888-674-8937 or email Bob Welch at bob.welch@mpi.net.
Still Seeking Low-Temperature Cure Paints
MPI is considering adding low temperature-cure products to our #10 and #15 exterior latex standards. If you've got products that fit the bill and want to be part of this process, email Bob Welch with data sheets and information on your applicable products. |
