 THIS MONTH'S NEWS

A Guide to MPI-Approved Interior Latex Paints

For any paint to be approved by MPI, our lab performs a battery of tests (ASTM and other) that appropriately measure performance for each different type of paint and gloss level. For example, approved interior latex paints have passed minimum requirements for dry time, consistency, hiding power, reflectance, alkali resistance, burnish resistance, scrubbability, flexibility, etc.

To help specifiers/buyers navigate the wide range of interior latex products available, MPI has developed three different ‘families’ of standards:
  • “Conventional” latex, from flat to gloss: MPI #s 53, 44, 52, 43, 54, and 114

  • High Performance Architectural Latex: MPI #s 138 through 141

  • Institutional Low Odor/VOC Latex: MPI #s 143 through 148

The table below compares scrubbability and cleansability requirements for a semi-gloss paint from each family of standards. MPI goes beyond convention to evaluate scrubbability: we mark failure as when the film exhibits a substantially degraded appearance; not when the film breaks. Note that both #141 High Performance and #147 Low Odor/VOC latex have more rigorous requirements than #54 Conventional, and include requirements for stain resistance: we subject these samples to catsup, mustard, red wine, hot coffee, and graphite to measure their cleansability.

High Performance Architectural latex has the most stringent requirements, and since many Approved Products meet MPI’s Green Performance Standard, they can offer an attractive combination of superb performance and compliance.

For projects where virtually zero VOC and low/no odor are desirable, such as occupied buildings or maintenance repaint situations, Institutional Low Odor/VOC latex is ideal: the performance requirements are just slightly less demanding than the ‘high performance’ category but still much higher than ‘conventional’ – so the specifier/buyer gets excellent performance with an exceedingly environmentally-friendly product. This category can also be a strategic choice for architects seeking LEED credits for new building applications: under LEED’s VOC budgeting feature, specifying an extremely low/no VOC product in some areas allows the architect to specify higher VOC products in other areas where conditions warrant their use, and still earn the LEED point.

This just in: Updates to MPI Standards
Change to Cleansability
There are twenty MPI standards that require testing to measure their cleansability (stain resistance): 112, 115, 128, 129, 130, 138, 139, 140, 141, 144, 145, 146, 147, 165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 181, and 215. As of April 16, 2010, all were revised regarding instructions for preparing panels prior to cleansability testing (Section 7) and these changes supercede the previous editions dated January 4, 2010. Those of you with older editions will also now find a detailed description for how to perform the graphite cleansability test.
